05.05.12Luckey’s – 933 Olive Street Eugene, OR 97401 – w/ The Golden Motors & Purple Sparrows
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Amy / Better to Be Broken Than Blind / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Ron Nasty / Skint City / Listen Up / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson) / Bellar & Bawl

Wow, what a killer gig. Five hour drive each way, but we had beautiful driving weather for the most part, and a good friend and host in Mr. Dan Jones waiting in Eugene. We got into town early, and ended up killing time at a pretty grim dining spot called the Horsehead. I hadn’t spent much time in Eugene before, but its downtown has a creepy, anarcho-punk, opioid-laden, 28 Days Later vibe. Once the show started, though, we had an absolute blast. I’ve gotta think this was one of our best four-piece sets ever…everything felt loose and a little wild, but not out of control. I’m still riding the high from this one in a lot of ways. It was also great to finally meet Craig Leve (and his friend Aaron McCoy) from KWVA, who’s been incredibly supportive. Great night!

05.04.12The Triple Door Musicquarium Lounge – 216 Union Street, Seattle, WA 98101
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Novelty’s Gone / How Long (Ace) / Amy / Skint City / Cissy Strut (The Meters) / Listen Up / Ron Nasty / Bellar & Bawl / set break / Poplar Bluff / Such an Easy Thing / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Engineer / Never Found a Girl (Al Green) / Better to Be Broken Than Blind / So It Goes (Nick Lowe) / Rosy Days / Undun (The Guess Who) / set break / Amy / Ron Nasty / When You Were Mine (Prince) / Engineer / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson) / more…

A three-hour marathon gig in the Triple Door’s swanky lounge…we had to play very quietly, which took a little getting used to, but by the second set, we’d settled in and had a lot of fun. I love these ‘background music’ gigs, as they can take on a very irreverent, “nobody’s listening” kinda vibe (in a good way). This one was no exception…lots of friends in the audience, too!

04.20.12Brown Lantern Alehouse – 412 Commercial Avenue Anacortes, WA 98221
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Novelty’s Gone / How Long (Ace) / Amy / Skint City / Cissy Strut (The Meters) / When You Were Mine (Prince) / Listen Up / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson) / Never Found a Girl (Al Green) / Bellar & Bawl / set break / Poplar Bluff / Such an Easy Thing / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Engineer / Never Found a Girl (Al Green) / Better to Be Broken Than Blind / So It Goes (Nick Lowe) / Rosy Days / Undun (The Guess Who) / more…

Always a good time in Anacortes. First set was a little sleepy, but we got a crowd for the second set and made ‘em dance. Thanks to Erik & company for their unflagging hospitality. Looking forward to the next time!

03.25.12Locöl Barley & Vine – 7902 35th St. SW, Seattle, WA 98126 – Lincoln solo
Setlist (order suspect): Such an Easy Thing / Poplar Bluff / 22 Rose Petal Place / Sweetheart Like You (Bob Dylan) / Me Too / Nighttime (Big Star) / You’re Breakin’ My Heart (Harry Nilsson) / Skint City / When You Were Mine (Prince) / Bellar & Bawl / Undun (The Guess Who) / Listen Up / Never My Love (The Association) / I Sleep Just Fine / set break / Grow Your Own / Novelty’s Gone / Hook Me Up (Alex Chilton/Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson) / Better to Be Broken Than Blind / I Feel For You (Prince) / I Hate to Eat Alone (10cc) / Fascinated / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Starboard Meets the Sound / Rosy Days / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson) / Take Care (Big Star)

After the stress (and mild disappointment) of the previous night, it was great to play a low-key dinner gig at this super-friendly West Seattle neighborhood joint. I played quietly, mostly for myself, and the regulars in attendance were attentive, but not too much. Lots of covers and some new originals, followed by a great dinner and a couple of glasses of wine with my lady. Not at all a bad way to spend a Sunday evening.

03.24.12Chop Suey – 1325 E. Madison, Seattle, WA 98122 – Lincoln solo w/ Loney Dear & Bahamas
Setlist: Novelty’s Gone / Poplar Bluff / Better to Be Broken Than Blind / Hook Me Up (Alex Chilton/Johnny Guitar Watson) / Skint City / Sweetheart Like You (Bob Dylan) / Me Too / Listen Up / Bellar & Bawl

I’d been looking forward to this show for weeks, and while it wasn’t at all bad, it didn’t quite live up to my (admittedly high) expectations. I’ve been a big fan of Bahamas for a couple of years now, and when I noticed a West Coast-shaped hole in their calendar between SXSW and some Canadian dates, I emailed their agent about their plans. Sure enough, they were looking for a Seattle date, and I was able to connect them with the folks at Chop Suey (and subsequently hop on as local support). Needless to say, I was stoked! Unfortunately, the show itself was a little underwhelming – sparse, very muted crowd (for all acts), and a little bit of a chilly vibe backstage. Still a big fan of the band, but I’d hoped to get a little more friendly. Oh well, I tried! Fortunately, not everyone felt the same – see Brittney Bush Bollay’s very kind review on Sound on the Sound for another take.

03.10.12El Corazon – 109 Eastlake Ave. E, Seattle, WA 98109 – w/ Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) & Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols/Faces)
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Amy / Engineer / Listen Up (If the World is Going to Hell) / Rosy Days / Skint City / Bellar & Bawl

When the opportunity to open for these UK punk legends arose, it was just too interesting to pass up. And when we discovered that legendary Blondie drummer Clem Burke would be backing both artists, we were even more intrigued! Our opening set was cut to a paltry 20 minutes, but I (for one) didn’t care. We prepared a concentrated blast of RJM’s most pogo-worthy material, and performed it with appropriate intensity. We probably weren’t what the crowd was expecting, but we had a lot of fun, and hey, we even sold some merch right off the stage. And then we got to watch Clem Burke (not to mention Messrs. Matlock and Cornwell) do their thing! Good times.

03.03.12LIVE on KEXP’s Audioasislisten on KEXP’s streaming archive!
Setlist: Poplar Bluff / Skint City / Listen Up (If the World is Going to Hell) / Bellar & Bawl

I’d been looking forward to this day for a long time, and I’m pleased to report that it lived up to my expectations. Ever since RJM released its first ‘band’ EP in 2006, I’ve been lobbying for a KEXP in-studio, but as with most things, it happened in its own time…and right on time. Special thanks are due to our buddies Jacob London & Nathan Wade, affectionately dubbed the Afterthoughts, for helping us out on backing vocals. Listen to the full session on KEXP’s Live Performances archive!

02.22.12Tractor Tavern – 5213 Ballard Ave. NW, Seattle, WA 98107 – w/ Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Poplar Bluff / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Rosy Days / Amy / Skint City / Listen Up (If the World is Going to Hell) / Bellar & Bawl / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson)

I’ve wanted to share a bill with Chuck for years, and what better occasion than the celebration for our first vinyl release? A terrific night all around…excellent crowd for a Wednesday night, great sound, good vibes. We had another reason to celebrate, too – this was our buddy Dan Walker‘s first hometown show with us, and he didn’t disappoint. An auspicious beginning to what I think is going to be an outstanding year. Thanks to all of the friends who attended, all the new friends who bought our 7″, and to Chuck & co. for sharing the stage. Hope to do it again real soon.

02.11.12Sirens Pub – 823 Water Street, Port Townsend, WA 98368 – w/ Clay Bartlett
Setlist: Grow Your Own / Poplar Bluff / I’ve Never Found a Girl (Al Green) / Engineer / How Long (Ace) / Rosy Days / Kinda Kute (Joe Jackson) / Bellar & Bawl / So It Goes (Nick Lowe) / Listen Up / set break / Novelty’s Gone / Such an Easy Thing / Any Major Dude (Steely Dan) / Amy / When You Were Mine (Prince) / Skint City / Undun (The Guess Who)

Our first visit to the quaint harborside town of Port Townsend, and our first show anywhere joined by our new keyboard buddy, Daniel Walker. Our good times were initially jeopardized by two monstrous flights of stairs (up which we had to carry all of our gear!) and some missing cymbals, but no one had a heart attack, cymbals were borrowed, and the show went on, much to the locals’ delight. Special thanks to our new buddy (and Port Townsend resident) Clay Bartlett, who made the much-needed cymbal connection and turned in an excellent opening set. Hope to be back in PT real soon…we’ll bring cymbals next time!
